An initiative is gaining speed to establish a national committee to explain to citizens the catastrophic consequences of Greece's exit from the euro zone and its return to the drachma. According to sources, eminent persons involved in the local governments, universities, research organizations and the creative community have been in intensive talks, aiming to reveal over the coming days and in all possible ways the need to keep Greece in the centre of Europe, and the fact that any other development would constitute an unprecedented national disaster.
According to the same sources, Athens and Thessaloniki mayors George Kaminis and Yiannis Boutaris will play the main role in this initiative that will involve about 50 people. A 5-member coordinating committee will be formed and receive informal legal status under the law on referendums (4023/11) to enable the initiative to participate in TV broadcasts and any other election activities in the form of a representative of civil society. Many governors and mayors will actively support the initiative too, as was clear from yesterday's statements by President of the Union of Greek Municipalities George Patoulis, who noted, "European Greece will win with the support of all local authorities."
New Democracy, Potami and PASOK are closely following, encouraging and already supporting this move but they have taken a joint decision not to take advantage of the initiative. The representatives of the three pro-European parliamentary parties took this decision during a series of meetings that they held over the past two days, also agreeing to act as a united front in the coming days. I.e. to put aside their differences over their common historical and national duty, namely the need for Greece to remain in Europe and to reveal the misleading dilemma posed by SYRIZA, Independent Greeks and Golden Dawn in their quest to return Greece to the drachma.
"We Stay in Europe"
The initiative "We Stay in Europe" by George Prokopakis, with the two large demonstrations organized in Athens and Thessaloniki, of course takes a central place in the activities that have already started.
As is already known, a similar rally is scheduled for tomorrow too, at 7:30 pm in Syntagma Square, during which famous public figures, who have taken from the outset a clear and firm position "for" Greece to stay in Europe, will deliver speeches and addresses.
