The new year 2016 arrived in Greece with snow, frost and low temperatures across the country.
The sun is going to be replaced by temporarily cloudier skies, with the clouds in northern Epirus and the Ionian Sea gradually becoming denser and producing showers in some places and snow at higher altitudes.
Temperatures will range from -10°C to 3°C in northern Greece, from -5°C to 5°C in central Greece, from -2°C to 7°C in southern Greece, from -1°C to 9°C in western Greece, and from 2°C to 8°C on the Aegean islands and Crete.
The Aegean will have from mild to moderate breezes from the north, and the Ionian Sea – from the southeast.
In Athens, temperatures will reach 6°C centrally, but the northern and eastern suburbs will be chillier by 2-3°C. A mild to moderate wind will blow from the north.
Meanwhile, traffic was restored in the morning after having been suspended yesterday due to snowfall and frost along Dionisou Avenue.
This morning was sunny, but cold in Thessaloniki. Temperatures are expected to reach 3°C during the day. There will be a mild wind.
Only drivers in the higher-altitude areas of Imathia, Pella and Kilkis will need chains on their tyres, says the release of the Police Chief Directorate for Central Macedonia.
In the Imathia region, vehicles are required to have chains on these road stretches:
- Thessaloniki-Kozani (through Kastania), from the 85th to 98th km;
- Veria-Seli, from the 9th (at Ksirolivadio exit) to 26th km (ski center Seli);
- Veria-Daskio, from the 20th to 43rd km;
- Naoussa - 3-5 Pigadia, from the 2nd to 16th km (3-5 Pigadia ski centre);
- Naoussa-Seli, from the 1st km to Seli;
- Naoussa-Rodochorio, form the 2nd to 14th km;
- Naoussa-Arkochorio.
In the Kilkis region, chains are required on the road Kastaneris-Livadion, as also in the Pella district in Kerasia, towards the Voras ski centre.
Weather on Saturday and Sunday
Temperatures are going to rise over the weekend, but Sunday will see worsening weather, with rain in the valleys, storms in the western part of the country, and snow in the mountains, as well as in parts of eastern Macedonia and Thrace.
On Saturday, clouds are expected throughout the country, with the Peloponnese, mainland Greece, Attica and the central Aegean in for some showers. Higher altitude places in these regions will be getting snowfalls. Temperatures will rise slightly, but some places in Epirus will be frozen over in the morning.
These developments will exacerbate on Sunday across the country, with the west seeing a few storms. The snow will be limited to the highlands, with the exception of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, where even lower altitude locations will get snowfalls. Temperatures will continue to rise.
