Bad weather continues to create problems in Greece

The violent storm that hit the island of Skopelos last night and lasted three hours caused severe damage throughout the island.

By order of the mayor, today all schools on the island are closed for security reasons. Landlines are disconnected in large areas of the main town of Skopelos. In addition, a large part of the island has remained without electricity since yesterday because of fallen trees and electricity poles.

Municipal teams have opened the streets that were blocked by stones and debris whereas 15 people from the fire department in Volos have arrived to assist in the damage repair.

The rough waters dragged and destroyed dozens of motorcycles and cars parked in different places along the sea front or dragged from other parts of the main city of the island.

Many shops along the sea front suffered serious damage too. The fire department on the island received information on a large number of flooded houses and shops to be drained.

In the "Society" broadcast on MEGA channel Skopelos Mayor George Michelis talked about an upheaval and incalculable damage. As he pointed out, a crater of about 15 metres has formed at the port, part of which is destroyed, and cars, motorcycles and whatever else can be imagined have piled up in it, dragged from the water. The road network is cut off in many places and a large number of drivers are blocked in farms, without being in danger. The mayor also noted that there are still many tourists on the island and appealed for help, as Skopelos has no technical service.

On the neighbouring island of Skiathos that was also hit by bad weather, the main street became a turbulent stream.

In Halkidiki, in Siviri in particular, hotels and homes were flooded after the local river overflowed due to heavy rains.

Local residents and tourists removed the water from houses and hotel rooms with the help of brooms and buckets. The fire department received over 100 signals and 60 teams are now helping local people.

The turbulent streams that formed in the village of Afitos on Kassandra dragged cars and flooded homes. The fire department responded to 150 signals for help and saved five people trapped in their cars.

A huge hole at Rhodes airport

The heavy rains yesterday made a huge hole at Rhodes airport, in particular on the landing strip. Consequently, it cancelled 25 flights of planes that were to land on the island and transferred some of them to the island of Kos, others to Iraklio and a third group to Athens. Several charter flights returned to the airport of departure.

According to the website rodiaki.gr, all flights to and from Rhodes airport have run normally since this morning, after the teams had filled the hole on the landing runway with a special material.

To recall that bad weather in Greece killed two people a few days ago and a tornado raged in the Peloponnese.
