Greece unexpectedly and quickly has fallen captive of Dimitar Berbatov’s charm. The great Bulgarian football star has not yet set foot on Greek soil but the media, fans and players do not stop talking about him. Greek national player Georgos Karagounis, a former teammate of Berbatov in the English team Fulham, also speaks favourably about the 34-year-old Bulgarian player and characterizes him as an "artist", on and off the field.
"I have played with a lot of good footballers, especially while I was in Inter. I have played top quality football with Berbatov. When he wants, he does amazing things. He scores a goal from any situation," says the Greek footballer in an interview with Sport FM.
Karagounis paid attention to the specifics of Berbatov’s game, who, according to him, is not able to run and press, he must have the support from the rest of the team to be able to do his best on the field. "He is a player with personality and is able to reverse the course of the game," adds the Greek.
"He is closed by nature but does not behave like a star. Some may think he is over proud because he has played in big teams but he is not. I think that in PAOK, with its audience, Berbatov will show the Mediterranean side of his character," said Georgos Karagounis. Regarding the age of the Bulgarian striker, he said that it is not manifested on the field and that the zeal of an individual player to excel among others is more important. "Berbatov has no major injuries and this matters. The quality of the player is even more important and it is the highest in the case of Berbatov. Surely he has something to offer PAOK but it is interesting if PAOK as a team will be able to draw the best from Dimitar Berbatov," stated Berbatov’s former teammate.
In conclusion, Georgos Karagounis said that Berbatov is ‘luxury’ for the Greek football championship and he will improve its level. "I wish him the best! Berbatov is a great gift for football fans, because he is a player who offers a spectacular game," concluded Karagounis.
As GRReporter has already announced, Dimitar Berbatov will arrive in Thessaloniki tomorrow to undergo medical tests and sign the contract with the local PAOK. The official presentation of the star and the jersey of his new team will take place tomorrow as well.
