Bomb placed in bags placed near garbage bin caused the death of a 15-year-old boy, wounded his 10-year-old sister, and their mother, who witnessed the tragedy, is in shock.
The bomb exploded last night shortly before 11:00PM in front of an office building in the Athens neighborhood Patisiya. The mother with her two children, who are Afghans and live 50 meters away from the incident, were passing along the garbage bin on their way home. The girl noticed a travel bag next to the garbage and opened it to see what's inside. Her 15-year-old brother pulled a broken clock out of the bag and decided to throw the bag in the garbage, when it exploded in his hands, says the mother.
The body of the boy is torn to pieces and found on the stairs of the building which is located ten meters away from the exploded bomb. Police started an investigation and closed off the neighborhood within a radius of 300 meters. At the beginning there was confusion because the police considered that maybe the bomb exploded in the hands of one who was going to place it next to the garbage. But then after the girl's mother was able to give evidence, it became clear that the victim of the explosion was her 15-year-old son.
The girl was immediately taken to Children's Hospital "Aglaia Kiriakou" where doctors concluded she has minor injuries. The 45-year-old mother is being treated in a Red Cross hospital for her injuries and is in strong shock.
Right now police are investigating one version that the bomb may be linked to a warning telephone call, which was made to ALTER TV on Sunday morning. Unknown individual warned that a bomb was placed in front of the EVEE building in Patisiya and it will explode in 6 minutes. At that point the police searched all buildings in the area but found none with this abbreviation and there was no explosion at the scheduled time.
The explosion in the evening, which took the life of the 15-year-old boy happened in front of the building abbreviated with EEDE (in translation: Greek company for business management). If the phone call on Sunday morning was not connected to the exploded bomb then police are working on another version that maybe the bomb was placed several minutes before it was found by the family and the terrorists have failed to notify anyone about it.
Meanwhile police are working on other versions while waiting on the residual explosive mechanism to determine whether the combination of substances coincides with previous bombs. Immediately after the explosion Minister of Public Protection Michalis Chrisochoidis passed through his office and then left to the investigation scene in Patisiya where he stated that "those murderers believe that we are all their enemies - the police, the immigrants and all citizens. Those murderers are against Greek society."
Yesterday evening Thessaloniki was shaken by another bloody raid - small group of young men with knives attacked 56-year-old man and his 22-year-old son. The reasons for the attack are being investigated by police
