On Thursday, 27 December, a 33-year-old woman was found murdered in Xanthi. Reportedly, the woman, a daughter of a prominent businessman from the city, was attacked in front of her own house by an unknown assailant. He tried to rape her and then stabbed her with a knife and set her on fire. The woman, who lived in Thessaloniki, had come to Xanthi for the Holidays.
On Thursday afternoon, a 27-year-old native of the city was arrested in connection with the crime, who has been arrested in the past for an attempted rape, robbery and drug dealing. Initially he claimed he was innocent and demanded that he be released. Later, however, he admitted his guilt, when the police told him that they had found his fingerprints and that a camera recorded his presence in the area. The arrested person made startling statements to the police about the crime he committed. He said he knew the victim, they were neighbours and he liked her. He met her by chance on Thursday morning and, despite her resistance, took her to a deserted place where he killed her in cold blood.
From the very first hour, he was the main suspect because of his criminal past and the fact that he was a neighbour. He claimed that he had been acquitted by the court of his former arrest, but the police are still investigating this past case. He was brought to the prosecution under enhanced security measures. Hundreds of residents gathered outside the court and tried to lynch him, and one of them managed to break the cordon and hit the offender. Because of the explosive atmosphere, the prisoner was transferred to the police station of the city after a long delay. Afterwards, the citizens who gathered there led a procession along the main streets of Xanthi which ended in front of the Police Department. They insisted, shouting, that the police deliver the arrested person to the people. Xanthi's Police Chief, George Godosidis, came out several times to calm people down and advised them to disperse. Meanwhile, various organisations expressed their sympathy with the family of the murdered woman. No lawyer, member the Bar Association in Xanthi, agreed to defend the person charged with murder.
On Friday, the woman was buried in her hometown.
