The Defence Ministers of Greece and Bulgaria Evangelos Venizelos and General Anyu Angelov signed in Athens the first air policing agreement on the Balkans - i.e. for common action in the event of air terrorism or piracy. "The Agreement does not stipulate actions against third parties, nor penetration deep into the territory of Bulgaria or Greece. It concerns cross-border cooperation between military aviation in case of a terrorist threat that goes from the airspace of one of the countries to the other," replied Minister Angelov to a question by GRReporter. He explained that technical details will be subject to further technical agreement. The aim of the joint activity is when Greek fighters "intercept" air terrorist threat, which is entering into the Bulgarian airspace, to stay with it until the Bulgarian fighters take off and are able to cope with it.

The two countries invited Romania to join the common anti-terrorism sky of Bulgaria and Greece. The signed agreement is part of the Framework Agreement in defense that the two Ministers signed during the first joint meeting of the governments of Bulgaria and Greece this summer in Athens. Evangelos Venizelos and General Anyu Angelov said that two more agreements between Bulgarian and Greece are being prepared – one for cooperation in the air industry and another one in the training of pilots and technical staff.
