A 43-year-old Bulgarian was killed in a road accident that involved the daughter of a Greek politician. The accident occurred on Skoufa street in the central Athens district of Kolonaki shortly after 8:00 pm last night. The 38-year-old woman parked her car near the sidewalk and then opened the door without looking around for passing vehicles. As a result, the Bulgarian citizen who was on his motorcycle at a distance of only a few metres hit the car door and died on the spot.

The woman immediately called the emergency and traffic police. The man was immediately taken to Alexandra Hospital in Athens, where the doctors confirmed his death. According to GRReporter’s sources, his name is Yordan Yordanov Petrov, born in 1972. The man had lived and worked in Greece for years.

In statements to the Greek online edition protothema.gr, the owner of a shop located near the scene indicated that the victim had not hit the car door but the iron bars across the street, "I saw that the door of the car parked across the street opened. The man on the motorcycle apparently feared he would hit it and turned towards the opposite sidewalk. I was told that he did not hit the car door but two iron railings, which are placed across the street for the parking of motorcycles. As he was not travelling at great speed, obviously he did not die from the hit but from a heart attack or at least a man who is working across the street said so."

Another witness said that as soon as she heard about the accident she came down to see what had happened. "The man was lying on the ground and one of the customers of the café across the street, apparently a doctor, was trying to help him. Meanwhile, they had called the emergency services, and the nearby clinic, and ambulances arrived from both places. They tried to help him, but to no avail. The woman was shocked, she was crying and trying to help him."

The 38-year-old woman was apprehended and spent the night in custody at the traffic police station in Athens. Today she gave evidence to the prosecutor and afterwards she was released on charges of accidental killing.

The woman is the daughter of a famous politician from New Democracy, who had held ministerial posts in the past and was chairman of the Greek parliament.
