The police in Kozani have revealed another case of an attempted sale of a baby and have arrested the mother of the baby, the couple and the mother of the man who are inhabitants of the village of Eordaea. The charges against all include attempted illegal adoption of a newborn and falsifying of documents, as reported by online edition eordaia.gr.
The Bulgarian woman had been hospitalized in "Mamatsio" in Kozani to give birth to the child. She pretended to be the wife of the Greek citizen from Eordaea, submitting to the hospital administration the health booklet of his true wife. The problems of the accomplices in the purchase of the baby began when the doctors and one nurse doubted if the pregnant woman was actually the owner of the health booklet. They informed the police in Kozani that very quickly uncovered the otherwise well-organized plan.
The hearing made it clear that the 23-year-old Bulgarian woman who had worked in restaurants in the regions of Ptolemais and Amindeo had become pregnant and had tried to sell the expected baby to the young couple from the village of Eordaea for 2,500 euro, the mother of the man playing the key role in the "deal".
According to the mother, the biological father of the baby is a Greek man from the region of Florina, who is married and the father of three children. She told the police that she had decided to sell her child because she did not want to raise her as a single mother.
The official police report indicates that the three accomplices were apprehended at noon on 28 November and that the baby's mother is 23 years old, the potential adopter 40, his wife 26 and his mother is 56 years old.
A day later, one Bulgarian citizen, aged 31, was apprehended on charges of being an intermediary in the sale.
Under the agreement, the mother would have received the agreed amount of 2,500 euro having given birth to the baby and delivering her to the adopters.
The girl was born in the morning of 28 November. She is in good health and is in Kozani hospital with her mother, who is recovering under police guard.
The three Greeks appeared before the prosecutor, being released after the interrogation with restrictive measures imposed on them. The 31-year-old Bulgarian man was taken for questioning on Sunday. The investigation of the case is underway.
