Two Bulgarians were apprehended in connection with the murder of Ilias Fanouris, aged 64, on Rhodes last Friday, as reported by the online edition rodiaki.gr. The man, who was also known as Bruno, was one of the most famous womanizers in Greece and he was found burnt at his house a few days ago.

Initially, the island authorities considered the case as a household accident. The subsequent investigation showed that the fire had been deliberately set to cover the murder of the man. In particular, the forensic doctor found three stab wounds on Fanouris’ body and no traces of smoke in his lungs.

The police investigation turned to two Bulgarians, since, according to witnesses, they were the last people to have seen Fanouris alive. According to sources from the island, the man, aged 35, and the woman, aged 37, had arrived at Rhodes together. The woman met Fanouris and their acquaintance had gradually turned into a sexual relationship. Sources say Fanouris had even tried to convince her to separate from her 37-year-old friend. He, in turn, had learnt about this, which had sparked off his conflict with Fanouris.

The two men quarrelled often, the young Bulgarian insisting on the older man leaving the woman alone. According to some reports, he told Fanouris that if he wanted to have a relationship with the woman he had to pay for it. It is assumed that there was another quarrel last Friday, which, however, ended in the murder of the older man.

Then the two Bulgarians set fire to his house to hide their traces. Sources from the island, however, indicate that the testimony of an eyewitness was crucial in uncovering the truth. In addition to the results of the autopsy, the analyses of the telephone calls of the attackers also explained the course of events.

A day after the murder they departed from Rhodes to go to Halkidiki, where they hoped to hide from the authorities. On Thursday, they were arrested in Poligiros village and then transported to Rhodes, where they were charged, to the degree of felony, with murder in a calm mental state and with arson. According to sources, during his arrest, the man told the police he did not intend to kill Fanouris, but only to scare him.

Ilias Fanouris or Bruno was one of the most famous womanizers of female tourists in Greece and especially on his native island of Rhodes. His story was even included in a documentary entitled "Colossi of Love".
