Last night was a hard one for Athenian citizens, because clashes between police and anarchists continued until late. From the very beginning the demonstration in honor of the murdered one year ago Alexis Grigoropoulos, started with violence. Anarchists climbed on top of the old Athens University building, brought down the Greek flag and put up an anarchist poster. When the Rector of the university Hristos Kittas tried to stop them, they hit him on the head and he was taken to the hospital with a mild heart attack. Right now he is in the emergency room.

The tension between police and anarchists continued until the early hours of the day. The anarchists have occupied the Athens Polytechnic University, the Law University and the Rectorate of the university. 177 demonstrators were arrested in Athens, injured are 16 policemen and 4 people, who were just passing by nearby. The anarchists transferred their anger to the Olympic Stadium in Athens, where the soccer game between Panathinaikos and Atromithos was taking place. The referee was pressured to stop the game, until the police deal with the vandals. At 09:00PM, a peaceful vigil took place at the spot, where Alexis was murdered.

In Thessaloniki demonstrators started throwing stones at the police and later started throwing Molotov cocktails at store windows. The police answered with tear gas and arrested 14 people. Demonstrations in Patra did not finish without problems as well. By the end of the rally in honor of Alexis’ death, the anarchists broke the windows of Greek posts branch and of nearby stores. In Patra there were arrested people as well. In Yoanina anarchists broke into bank branches and set trash cans on fire. The police arrested 20 people.
