Creditors impose conditions to return to Athens

The representatives of Greece's creditors will return to Athens only when it implements the undertaken commitments, as stated by European Commission spokeswoman Mina Andreeva.

In statements to the media in Brussels, she stressed that the talks with Athens will continue until the European Commission receives satisfactory results of line policies and actions.

"We are working for the successful completion of the ongoing monitoring, which will pave the way for completion of the fiscal consolidation programme in Greece." The European Commission spokeswoman also recalled that the discussion on the period after the end of the memorandum of financial assistance will start only after reaching an agreement with the members of the supervisory Troika on the completion of the ongoing monitoring.

According to a publication in the international economic magazine Bloomberg, the Greek government and the representatives of the creditors are at a deadlock over the final steps to be taken for the granting of the last tranche of the bailout.

The agency refers to sources who are familiar with the negotiations. They argue that the Greek cabinet is resisting pressure from the Troika to reduce the state budget for 2015 by another 2.5 billion euro, pointing out that because of the current standstill Greece could end up without any support after 1 January 2015, when the bailout is due to end.

According to Bloomberg, the members of the supervisory Troika are furious due to the inability of the Greek government to take concrete measures to fill the budget gap for next year, even despite the fact that earlier this month euro-area finance ministers had warned it about the delayed implementation of the undertaken commitments.

Under these conditions, it is possible that Greece will miss the Eurogroup meeting on 8 December, at which it hoped to reach an agreement on the actions required to release the last tranche of the bailout and to initiate the talks on the "era after the end of the memorandum."
