A policeman was killed in a gunfight between the police and heavily armed bandits. The incident happened around 2 am last night near the village of Distomo in Viotia. The policemen were carrying out a routine check of a vehicle and of the five passengers in it and found weapons on them. The bandits started shooting, fatally wounding one of the policemen.
     The authorities suggest that the perpetrators are recidivists who had escaped a month ago from the prison in Trikala in central Greece. A major police operation to apprehend them is currently underway.
