Cuts in the salaries of the Prime Minister, the President of Parliament, cabinet members

Deputy Minister of Finance Christos Staikouras proposed a draft law for discussion entitled "Cutting public spending and settlement of issues related to fiscal controls."

By order of Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, the provisions in the bill expect a reduction in public spending related to the functioning of the political system and political government in the country. In particular, cuts in:

The remuneration of the Prime Minister and the President of Parliament by 1,872 euro per month.

The remuneration of the Deputy Prime Minister and leader of the largest opposition party, by 1,404 euro per month.

The remuneration of ministers and deputy ministers who are also deputies by 935 euro per month.

The remuneration of ministers and deputy ministers who are not deputies by 468 euro per month.

Also, with a decision signed by Deputy Minister of Finance Christos Staikouras, a reduction in remuneration of chief secretaries in the ministries, chief secretaries in decentralized administrations and staff in local authorities offices, is also foreseen.

According to this decision, a chief secretary in a ministry and a chief secretary in a decentralized administration, with a monthly payment of 5,856.08 euro to date, will now receive 5,000 euro.

A regional governor, with a monthly payment of 5,270.47 euro to date, will now receive 4,500 euro.

A regional governor, with a monthly payment of 3,952.85 euro to date, will now receive 3,375 euro.

A chairman of a regional council with a monthly payment of 2,635.24 euro to date, will now receive 2,250 euro.

A mayor (of a municipality with over 100,000 residents), with a monthly payment of 5,270.47 euro to date, will now receive 4,500 euro.

A mayor (of a municipality from 20,000 to 100,000 residents), with a monthly payment of 4,216.38 euro to date, will now receive 3,600 euro.

A mayor (of a municipality of under 20,000 residents), with a monthly payment of 3,162.28 euro to date, will now receive 2,700 euro.

A deputy mayor (of a municipality of over 100,000 residents), with a monthly payment of 2,635.24 euro to date, will now receive 2,250 euro.

A deputy mayor (of a municipality from 20,000 to 100,000 residents), with a monthly payment of 2,108.19 euro to date, will now receive 1,800 euro.

A deputy mayor (of a municipality of under 20,000 residents), with a monthly payment of 1,581.14 euro to date, will now receive 1,350 euro.

A chairman of a municipality council (of a municipality of over 100,000 residents), with a monthly payment of 2,108.19 euro to date, will now receive 1,800 euro.

A chairman of a municipality council (of a municipality from 20,000 to 100,000 residents), with a monthly payment of 1,686.55 euro to date, will now receive 1,440 euro.

A chairman of a municipality council (of a municipality of under 20,000 residents), with a monthly payment of 1,264.91 euro to date, will now receive 1,080 euro.

A special secretary in a ministry, with a monthly payment of 4,871.30 euro to date, will now receive 4,250 euro.

A secretary in a ministry of the 1st degree, with a monthly payment of 2,785.00 euro to date, will now receive 2,240 euro.

A secretary in a ministry of the 2nd degree, with a monthly payment of 2,582.00 euro to date, will now receive 2,080 euro.

According to the Directorate of the General Accounting Office, these measures will result in a decrease of public expenses by 9-10 million euro per year.

This amount will be used as a financial equivalent for the payment of the equalizing compensation to livestock farmers.

The draft law also provides for the reduction of state expenditures for rent of buildings occupied by government institutions. In particular, the following reductions are foreseen:

a) For monthly rents of up to 1,000.00 euro, a reduction of 10%.

b) For monthly rents from 1,000.01 euro to 2,000.00 euro, a reduction of 15%.

c) For monthly rents from 2,000.01 euro to 3,000.00 euro, a reduction of 20%.

d) For monthly rents, exceeding 3,000.00 euro, a reduction of 25%.

According to the Directorate of the General Accounting Office, these measures will result in a decrease of public expenses by 15-17 million euro per year.
