An unsuccessful attempt to escape from the prison in the Athens suburb of Korydallos alerted the administration, the police headquarters of the Greek capital and the Ministry of Justice. Panagiotis Vlastos, who is considered one of the most dangerous criminals in Greece, tried to escape using a weapon, which no one knows how it got into his hands. One of the possibilities being investigated is that Vlastos took the gun from one of the guards.

According to sources from the Ministry of Justice, the attempted escape occurred in the room where the visits with the prisoners take place. Vlastos and four other prisoners, who are members of the terrorist group Conspiracy of Fire Nuclei, tried to escape but the guards caught them before they could get to the last down and go out into the prison yard.

According to police sources, the prisoners are currently in the visiting room, where they are negotiating with the prison administration to surrender. Some of the visitors, who were already present during the attempted escape, are still there.

Numerous police units have cordoned off the area around the prison. Ambulances and fire vehicles have arrived at the place in the event that a prison riot breaks out and the residents begin to light fires, as has happened in the past. The authorities are willing to take action and to break into the prison, if necessary. The police are looking for collaborators of the potential refugees in the region outside the prison.

The police say that Panagiotis Vlastos chose to flee during visiting hours in order to take advantage of the presence of many visitors. He had been moved from the prison in Trikala to the prison in Korydallos for him to attend the trial against him for the kidnapping of the ship owner Perilikis Panagopoulos. A few days ago, the prosecutor proposed that he be sentenced to life imprisonment for his involvement in the kidnapping and in a murder in another case. Commentators believe that it was the expectation of the sentence that had made Vlastos try to escape from prison.
