Based on a research done by WWF the hot days in Greece will increase with 20 in the following ten years and the thunder storms with 20%, which will be the main characteristic trait for climate change.

The research was done in specific regions, which are of great importance for the economy and natural resources of the country and the results are not only discouraging but daunting. According to experts the wildfires and hot days will increase in the following 40 years.

The research carries the topic “Tomorrow in Greece: consequences of climate change in Greece in the near future” and it has the goal to forecast the changes, which will come between the period of 2021 to 2050 in comparison to 1969-1990.

According to the results, the citizens of big cities like Athens, Patra, Thessaloniki, Lamia and Larissa will have to live through another 20 hot days in the year. Meanwhile throughout the year it will start raining less but during the raining season the storms will increase with 10% to 20%. The data shows that the threat of fires and floods will increase in the big cities. Specifically in Athens, experts forecast that the hot days will increase with additional 10-15 days, the nights with temperatures higher than 20˚C with increase with another 30 nights and the days with strong rains will increase with another 10.

The weather change will cause a shock in farming and there is a possibility of many regions turning into desserts, because water will be less and hot days will be more.

It is expected that in Euboea the dry days per year will be more with 25 days and the citizens of Seres and Larissa will have to live through 20 additional hot days throughout the year. In Iraklio and Pela rain falls will decrease with 15%. It is expected that in the burnt Parnitha the temperatures will increase with 1.5 degrees and the “fire threat” days will increase with another 20.
