A Greek soldier lost his life in peacetime after an armoured personnel carrier type M113 overturned during training. The incident occurred near the area of Sikamino in the local lane on the Athens - Lamia road. The vehicle was involved in the training of the 575th battalion of the army when it left the column. The machine overturned and the driver of the M113 was wounded to death.

Athanasios Tselios, head of the General Staff, arrived at the scene to control the investigation. The political and military leadership of the Ministry of Defence expressed their condolences to the family of the deceased.

"The case has given rise to a series of reactions in the political world. Immediate and clear explanations of the reasons for the overturn of the M113, which have led to the loss of the young soldier," were requested by Thodoris Dritsas, a representative of the parliamentary opposition SYRIZA party. He has raised the question as to the quality of education of the Greek army and the lack of security in its transportation, and requested a full report on the technical status of the vehicle. "An armoured carrier used by the Greek state over the past 10 years is not made to go out of control and especially, when it is not on the battlefield," says Dritsas.

Deputies from Panos Kamenos’ party, Independent Greeks, have also insisted on an immediate investigation of the incident by independent experts. The statement stresses that the armed forces must ensure the physical inviolability of their employees so that they are proud to defend the country.

The most dramatic was the response of Golden Dawn, whose representatives stated that the incident was a result of the government line followed by the mercenary politicians of the Memorandum who wanted to destroy the military power of Greece. "This equipment is useless and it should have been scrapped a few decades ago, but this was not done due to "financial" constraints, i.e. in order for us to pay ‘predatory’ interests to the international money lenders. At the same time, the corrupt political system has not cut any of its own privileges and continues to live parasitically on the entire nation," the statement reads.
