A few days remain until the elections in Greece that are scheduled for 20 September and the second election debate between Alexis Tsipras and Evangelos Meimarakis will take place tonight.
The new TV "clash" between the two leaders is coming as a response to a number of declarations on their part, indicating that SYRIZA and New Democracy are especially negative to the prospect of possible cooperation after the elections. And this despite the very small differences in the percentages of both parties reported by all polls and the negligible probability of any of them forming an independent government.
In an interview with ERT on Sunday evening Alexis Tsipras left open the possibility of cooperation with PASOK and Potami party. He said that no one would assume the political responsibility for other elections, stating that according to him, these two parties would responsibly consider the need for avoiding a new round of elections.
Tsipras said, however, that a joint government of SYRIZA and New Democracy would be "unnatural".
Evangelos Meimarakis, in turn, said in Thessaloniki on Sunday that anyway Tsipras would not want to participate in a government that would be formed after the eventual victory of New Democracy. The leader of the right-wing party also accused the former Prime Minister of stubbornly refusing to consider possible cooperation.
The New Democracy leader stated he would like serious SYRIZA members to become part of a government of broad cooperation, and that he would consider with his collaborators a potential proposal of Tsipras becoming a Deputy Prime Minister in the government.
Unlike the group debate of political leaders, this time the participants will be able to show 'red cards' and lead a dialogue.
Each of the two party leaders will be able to comment on the responses of the other and show a 'red card'.
The debate will begin at 9:00 pm and will last about two hours.
The atmosphere in the studio will be the same and six journalists from six private channels broadcast in Greece will address questions to the political leaders. The discussion will be led by Panos Charitos of state broadcaster ERT.
