The six leaders of the main parties agreed to have a pre-election debate on Monday September 21. The debate between Kostas Karamanlis and Georgios Papandreou will be the following night on September 22.
The two dates were proposed by the opposition party and the governing New Democracy, which before offered three different dates, was forced to accept the debate on Monday and Tuesday.
The rules of the TV debate will be set during the upcoming dates, in order to create the necessary conditions for a true discussion. The parties need to decide on the format and the continuity of the debate.
PASOK leader Georgios Papandreou stressed that his party is insisting on a direct dialog, including the public and a direct political comparison. The Greek communist party confirmed that despite its noncompliance it will participate in the debate.
The Coalition of the Left Radicals sent a letter, in which they offer a revision of the conditions of the debate, so that it can be more lively and meaningful.
New Democracy did not want to have an audience in the studio but the PASOK leader said that the dialogue between the two rivals for the PM post must be direct and without “mediators”. The offer is for one journalist to be present but to have the opportunity for a direct and free conversation between Mr. Karamanlis and Mr. Papandreou.
Also Papakonstandinou offer the debate to be 90 minutes long as opposed to 60 and to be separated into different subjects and the two politicians will be standing across from each other and the journalist will be between them – just like the German model.
