A new star on the political horizon rises with the official founding of the Party of Dora Bakoyannis Democratic Alliance. Former Foreign Minister from the Government of Costas Karamanlis declared newborn political formation to be center-right. According to initial information the Democratic Alliance gathers under its wing the independent (to date) Members of Parliament Christos Markogiannakis and Costas Kiltidis who quit from New Democracy and it is expected to also attract members of the Blue party active in the local government.
"Our statements will be oriented towards convincing the public that we will follow other different from the known until now practices of populism," said before the Greek radio station Real FM Christos Markogiannakis. He assured that the new organization will prove their moral stability, by saying the truth to the people about the measures which will have to be taken in order to exit the crisis. Expectations are that the Democratic Alliance will hold quite definite position on the critical for Greece issues such as the status of the local economy, the taxation system, public sector and education.
Markogiannakis does not exclude the possibility new political organization to support the Government in implementing financial reforms, but only under the condition that there is a serious attitude of other political partners to the future of the country. "It will not be a union at will, but a union of people who really want the good of the country at this difficult time. It seems that not all understand in what situation we are."
Thus Christos Markogiannakis made a reference to the vote in the parliament of the Memorandum of financial assistance this spring, which became the main reason for the expulsion of Dora Bakoyannis of the ranks of New Democracy. The main line of the blue party then and now is against the International Monetary Fund and the eurozone. Bakoyannis, on the other hand was the only member of the opposing party to vote "For" the adoption of the contract, ignoring the order of the New Democracy leader Antonis Samaras.
Another follower of Dora Bakoyannis, who will support her in building the new party is the MEP Theodoros Skylakakis. In mid-September showed Samaras showed the door to Skylakakis. Insiders say he is among the immediate circle of Bakoyannis. In the period 2003-2006, when she was mayor of Athens, Theodoros Skylakakis was a municipal councilor. Since 2006 he was transferred to the position of Chief Secretary for International Economic Relations and Cooperation Development at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs again shoulder to shoulder with Dora. He is economist by education and the young politician came out in support of the mechanism for financial assistance as the only alternative for the financial survival of Greece. This determined his fate, and he declared himself an independent MP. Since Sunday, November 21st he is also expected to enter the Democratic Alliance, which it looks as if it will break the bipolar political system known so far.
The colors of the new party will be blue and orange, which as appears will be like a red flag to a bull in the eyes of Antonis Samaras. Insiders say that the leader of New Democracy has some concerns about who else will follow former foreign minister in the new political organization. His restlessness can only be further aggravated by the mysticism, in which is expected to be held the constituent assembly of the Democratic Alliance - cameras of journalists and broadcasters will be banned, and in addition to the mentioned three names of independent MPs it is not clear who else will support the daughter of Konstantinos Mitsotakis.
