Technical problem in the system for departure of the aircrafts and a failure of the networks for communication between airports have caused major problems in air traffic over Greece. As a result of the technical breakdown, the Center for flight control in Athens lost track of the air traffic. The problem is in the electronic systems of all flights control towers which are connected to the central system in Athens. The problem was found at 9 am and following were suspended the departures of all aircraft from the airports in the country.
Therefore, the Civil Aviation Office prohibited any aircraft from taking off from airports in the country, while landings are performed quite normal. Communication between the airports and airplanes is done in spare frequencies. Technicians who are working under pressure to fix the problem, still can not determine the cause of the problem nor can they assess the scale of the damage or when it will be eliminated. Since the morning dozens of flights have delayed their departure and in many of them passengers are still in on board of the planes which have taken their position for departure and expect to not be authorized.
Around 10:30 this morning the problem was determined and little by little the normal traffic of the aircraft was recovered.
