A new political movement to the right of New Democracy in the political spectrum has been founded by the disaffiliated former members of Panos Kamenos’ Independent Greeks party. The name of the movement is "Greeks’ Initiative."
Its founders define it as a forum for the exchange of ideas and do not hide their ambitions to develop it into a party. According to them, the ideological framework of the new political think tank will range between the patriotic and the people’s right wing.
The movement involves former members of Independent Greeks Christos Zois, Yiannis Manolis, Yiannis Kourakos, Mihalis Giannakis and Dimitris Stamatis and the independent Nikos Stavroianis.
So far, it is unclear who will lead the new political formation but the most probable leader seems to be Christos Zois, as the recent parliamentary representative of Independent Greeks Kostas Markopoulos is not involved in the new venture, at least not yet.
Moreover, his move to publish an article in the Sunday edition of "Eleftheros Tipos" newspaper in which his evaluation of New Democracy is positive despite his, until recently, sharp criticism did not go unnoticed.
Kostas Markopoulos is still of the opinion that Greek society is not interested in the establishment of new parties at present and therefore, there is no room for any. Christos Zois in turn believes that the present moment requires bold actions and that it is absolutely necessary to create a new party directed against the memorandum in the right wing of the political spectrum.
Zois and Markopoulos share the ambition to become leaders. But while the former supports the idea of collective leadership, the latter one did not support the initiative from the outset.
The main reason for Kostas Markopoulos’ disagreement to be involved in it is his opinion that the "memorandum-anti-memorandum" dilemma is an anachronism already and the discussion should move to another level.
