The cleaning ladies dismissed from the Ministry of Finance, who became the symbol of the radical left SYRIZA on its way to power have been appointed as court secretaries.
After violent protests against the government of New Democracy and PASOK, the women who became popular for the red rubber gloves and the tent camp near the ministry, returned to work by order of the first SYRIZA government that was elected in January. By decision of the Minister of Justice, two days ago they were appointed as secretaries in courts and prosecutor’s offices throughout Greece.
Immediately after the decision was published in the Official Gazette, Greek society responded to the appointments as they are being made at a time when many schools in various regions of Greece are not functioning due to lack of teachers and hospitals due to lack of staff from the time before the crisis.
There were so many reactions that the Ministry of Justice had to issue a message, in which it defined the appointments of the former cleaning ladies as "legitimate."
"The transfers in question that have been recently discussed meet all legal requirements. The availability of all required skills and criteria has been established in compliance with law and order," it reads.
Many commentators on social networks indicate that they do not contest the legality of the appointments since the women have the necessary qualifications and skills. They point out that the initial appointment of staff in the departments responsible for the cleaning of government institutions with the aim of transferring them to other offices at a later stage has been a common practice in the Greek public sector. "What is embarrassing and unacceptable is that by this action, the government is doing a return favour to these women whom it had turned into a flag of protest, while SYRIZA was in opposition," they emphasize.
