If you see a donkey in your dream which is braying it means you will receive a heritage or you will be free from some duties. However no matter what the dreams prophesies the cute donkeys are not just a means for transportation, but their milk is a balsam for the health and soul. We are familiar with it since ancient times from Cleopatra who was traveling with hundreds of donkeys in order to take baths in their milk, because it contains nutrients, vitamins and other components which are good for the health and the skin. According to researches the donkey milk is better quality than the one from the cow and is very close to the mother’s milk.

In the past few decades in several European countries – Belgium, France, Italy and Yugoslavia were created farms for the breeding of donkeys with the purpose of producing cosmetic products, however also for the production of pure milk suitable to drink. In Belgium in the farm of Olivier Denis in Chateau de Mot the mild is sold at a price of over 100 euro per liter. In the Zasavitsa Park in Serbia, Slobodan Shibic is producing milk for the production of various products like soap, facial creams, shampoos, but also a type of liquor. The price of cheese which he produces when ordered exceeds 1000 euro per kilogram, and for its production were required 25 liters of milk.

Only in the past five years there are over 60 scientific articles about the milk according to which it could be used by babies who have allergies to the cow milk and also in other cases of allergies as well as for prevention against various diseases of the adults. “Recently there is a strong interest in the donkey milk at production level, but also on the part of the science” says professor Georgeos Arsenos, teacher in the Thessaloniki University Aristotle.

Nikos Bukuvalas who has been breeding donkeys for three years in the town of Edessa says: “In Greece we are a total of 4 – 5 producers of donkey milk. We produce about 12 kilos a day, which we sell for 12 – 25 euros per liter to the buyers who use it for production of cosmetic products. If we sell it suitable to drink it is much more expensive.”

In Karditsa Panagiotis Papapostolou has 35 donkeys. “It is a difficult animal the donkey. When it gives birth it breast feeds for 11 months and then if it gives birth again it continues to breast feed another 11 months. It is very difficult to milk. There is a special technique to do that. Some animals are more knobbly then others and it is difficult to milk them.”

“We have to underline that all the farms abroad have been created under private initiatives. In any case the breeding of donkeys is difficult and requires skills. The question is whether such a farm is profitable ad the answer is that it is profitable only if the sale of the product has been arranged” says Mr. Arsenos in an article for the Elevterotipia newspaper.
