The official pre-election fight of New Democracy started yesterday, in which competing for leaders are Dora Bakoyanni, Dimitris Avramopoulos, Andonis Samaras and Panayotis Psomiadis. Most likely the leader elections will take place at the beginning of December, because the date was already changed few times.
Based on latest information the election was supposed to take place on December 6. The election will probably be one week earlier due to fear of demonstrations, because of the one year anniversary of Alexis Grigoropoulos’ death in Exarhia.
Based on survey done by Marc agency for Alpha TV, for now leader in the competition in New Democracy is the former foreign minister Dora Bakoyanni.
It is believed that Mrs. Bakoyanni is the most appropriate leader because 34.7% of her party’s supporters will vote for her. Right after her comes Andonis Samaras with 25.8%, Dimitris Avramopoulos with 19.8% and Panayotis Psomiadis with 9.4%.
If a second election round is needed, the party members will have to choose between Dora Bakoyanni and Andonis Samaras – the former foreign minister is leading with 48.5% and the former minister of culture has 43.7%. Mrs. Bakoyanni is also a leader in the other possible scenarios in the second round.
The interesting thing is that despite Mr. Kostas Karamanlis’ plead towards the runner-ups and their supporters not to argue, the atmosphere in the party is tense. All four candidates always find a way to insinuate and to speak with understatements against each other.
