A double earthquake rocked Athens and the surrounding area early on Tuesday. The first quake was recorded at 1:05 am and the second in 1:09 am, both having a magnitude of 5.1 on the Richter scale.
According to the Institute of Geodynamics of the National Observatory of Athens and the Department of Geophysics of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the epicentre was 76 km north of Athens and 23 km northwest of Halkida. The seismic focus was at a shallow depth and according to seismologist Efthimios Lekkas, it is part of southern Atalantis, a seismic focus that had previously caused earthquakes and that is familiar to scientists.
The aftershocks were very intense, in the range of 3.8 and 3.9 on the Richter scale. The quakes were strongly felt throughout the Attica region, but also in Viotia and Thessaly.
Director of the Institute of Geodynamics of the National Observatory of Athens Akis Tselentis does not exclude another earthquake with the same seismic focus. He has warned people to be careful, because the area is highly seismic and it had caused strong earthquakes in the past. According to him, the seismic focus does not belong to the southern part of Atalantis.
So far, there is no evidence of injuries or property damage.
To be continued.
