Downtown Athens paralyzed because of strikes

24-hour strike was announced by public sector employees went out on a protest rally in central Athens. Doctors, teachers, ministry officials and state agencies, archeologists and artists protest against government measures. Meanwhile port workers continue their strike action. 

Union of employees in the public sector ADEDI announced a protest rally at 11:00AM at Klavtmonos Square against the new provisions relating to the pension system and economic policy of the government. The union of members of the Communist Party also announced a 48-hour strike and today held a rally at Syntagma Square. 

Schools are closed due to strike of teachers and university lecturers who rebel against the new law the Ministry of Education. State agencies and the courts will also not work because of the strike of judicial clerks. 

Hospitals will operate with emergency staff, because as of yesterday, doctors began a 48-hour strike due to 20% -30% reductions of the allowances per shift. Problems are expected at ports too because of the port workers strike, although their strike was declared to be illegal. Since yesterday morning, no passenger ships to the Cycladic Islands and the islands of the Saronic Gulf have sailed from the port of Piraeus. 

Buses, subways, trams and trolleys will run throughout the day.
