The whole night drivers of trucks and tanks spent in front of the parliament in protest against the government's intention to liberalize the labor market in their respective industry. Yesterday the Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications introduced the bill in the parliament and MPs discussed it. Today it will be voted and because the governing party PASOK has a majority, it will most likely be accepted.
Drivers of heavy vehicles are protesting for ten days now. Over 5000 tanks and trucks are not traveling, which practically means that the wholesale trade in Greece is dormant. Hundreds of containers are waiting unloaded at the ports in Piraeus, Thessaloniki and Patras, in the supermarkets can already be felt the lack of fresh products.
Hundreds of trucks are staying on the entry and exit routes from Athens and Thessaloniki and are causing heavy traffic jams on the highways. Squads of the forces to combat civil unrest prevented the heavy vehicles from entering in the cities, as they allowed in the protest to take part in only their drivers.
Currently it is not known how long the strike of the drivers will continue. They insist to keep the licensing regime, but at lower prices of the licenses and to increase the transition period of the reform. In turn the government has decided to vote on the law as submitted in the Parliament and insists that Greece has the most expensive freight and the oldest vehicles park in the European Union.
