Shortly before 10 o'clock this morning an earthquake of 4.3 on the Richter scale with epicentre in Amfiklia was recorded near the city of Lamia. The quake was felt in Athens too. According to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismic Centre, the quake was of 4.4 on the Richter scale, its epicentre being 37 kilometres southeast of the city of Lamia.
Yesterday two earthquakes with such power were registered in Greece - one near the town of Patras and the other on Kefalonia, which has been shaking for a second week in a row.
"The earthquake near Lamia has a completely different background and it is not connected with that on Kefalonia. The seismic activity there began on 7 August and what we see now are isolated aftershocks," said Vassilis Karastathis, a seismologist at the National Observatory of Athens.
Meanwhile, the intense aftershock activity on Kefalonia continues. A quake of 3.2 on the Richter scale, which rocked the earth at around 11.00 am, was particularly disturbing for the residents of the Ionian island. Last night there were two strong aftershocks of 3.8 and 3.0 on the Richter scale.
