A strong earthquake of magnitude 6 on the Richter scale jolted the islands in the Ionian Sea this morning. The quake was felt in Athens, too.
According to the first data from the Geodynamics Institute of the National Observatory of Athens, the earthquake struck at 09.10 a.m. Its epicentre lay 11 km southwest of Lefkada and its focal depth was only 5 km.
The quake lasted for a rather long time and was felt from the islands in the Ionian Sea all the way to the central Greece regions and Nafplio in the Peloponnese.
There has been no information so far of casualties and material damage. It is believed that the earthquake was generated by the fault line between the islands of Lefkada and Corfu.
Until shortly before 10 a.m., four aftershocks were registered with magnitudes of 4.1 to 3.5 on the Richter scale. According to seismologists, the seismic activity will continue for a long time and it will be intense.
