An earthquake of 4.4 on the Richter scale rocked Athens at 4:58 am today. Athens Institute of Geodynamics reported that the earthquake had occurred at a distance of 22 km east of Athens and 4 km east of the suburb of Pikermi. The depth of the earthquake focus was about 5 km. The quake was felt in the whole of Attica, without causing any damage, and in Corinth and Evia.
Kostas Makropoulos, head of the Institute of Geodynamics, told Mega TV that this was a major rather than an aftershock and that the area around Pikermi had not experienced major earthquakes in the past. Professor of geology Efthimios Lekas told the state NET television that the area around the epicentre had caused quakes in the range of 4.5 to 5 on the Richter scale in the past, specifying that there were no plates there such as could cause stronger quakes. Such quakes were registered in 1983, 1988 and 2001 and the earthquake focus has been quiet ever since.
