The extended cabinet meeting which was expected to make key decisions on the subsequent actions of the government and Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras ended shortly after 5:30 pm. It seems that Tsipras will announce early elections on 20 September. The relevant information was disseminated by various Greek media, including the newspapers Kathimerini and Ethnos, the website iefimerida.gr and Sky and Mega TV stations.
It is expected that the Prime Minister will deliver a televised address to the Greek people to explain the reasons for the announcement of early elections. Immediately afterwards he will visit Greece's President.
After the extended session Alexis Tsipras had telephone conversations with political leaders to inform them of the developments. According to sources, the purpose of the Prime Minister is for the caretaker government to take an oath by Monday. It will most likely be headed by Vassiliki Thanou-Christofilou, chairwoman of the Supreme Administrative Court.
