An explosion of a mortar tube has caused the death of three soldiers. The accident took place during a military exercise with heavy weapons at the military testing ground in the region of Glafires village near Volos. Two of those killed were professional military men, and the third one was doing his compulsory military service.
A lieutenant of the Greek army was also badly wounded by the explosion. According to sources from the hospital in Volos he is in serious condition having sustained wounds on the outer part of the abdominal wall.
The circumstances under which the accident happened have not yet been clarified. The Deputy Defence Minister, Yiannis Lambropoulos, and Chief of the Army General Staff, Lieutenant Christos Manolas, are travelling to the polygon. They went by order of Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos, who declared three days of mourning among the Greek armed forces.
