Bad weather has hit half of Greece from Friday afternoon until today - from Kefalonia to Thessaloniki and from Kavala to Sfakia in Crete.
In Thessaloniki, the grizzly storm began at noon on Saturday. The Fire Brigade has received dozens of calls for flooded buildings, the roads have turned into rivers and endless lines of cars clogged them in some places.
The parking at Macedonia Airport has morphed into a huge lake, in which cars could not get around.
The roof of the sports hall in Micra began leaking shortly before the handball game between PAOK and Doukas. They had to collect water in buckets.
Heavy rain caused mayhem in Nea Peramos near Kavala. Houses were drowned and the roads resembled rivers. The fire service was called to drain flooded buildings. So far there is no clear picture of the damage caused. Rainfall has strongly disfigured the roads in the region.
The storm rampaged through Gythio as well, where the Ksiria dry river burst its banks. Two central streets turned into turbulent rivers, and a large part of the city's commercial centre was flooded. The storm stopped just when street water levels had reached a critical point threatening to submerge the shops along the streets.
More than 60 tourists who were in Samaria gorge near the city of Chania in Crete were cut off after the storm caught them in the middle of the reserve. The group was recommended by the guards to return to their starting point, as the torrential waters made the gorge impassable.
Again on the island of Crete, in Sfakia, rains triggered landslides and Loutra beach turned red from the mud. People in Agia Roumeli were able to see a tornado forming in the sea.
Estimates of storm damage on the island of Kefalonia
Kefalonians calculate the damage caused by the disaster. The biggest devastation was seen in Karavomylos, Sami and on the road to the Melissani cave, where the storm destroyed the bridge and tourists can reach it only on foot.
The fire service and police intervened to rescue over 90 people who could not get out of their cars or their homes for the flooding. Teams have been reporting the sustained damage since Saturday morning, and a state of emergency was declared on the island.
Where else will the storm hit?
Rains and storms are expected in Central and Eastern Macedonia, in Thrace, the north and north-east Aegean, in the central part of the country and Crete.
