While Greece is sweating, and Europe and the world are looking at Athens waiting for the composition of the new government to be announced, Antonis Samaras has surprised everyone with a written message he issued minutes ago.
"There is national dignity. For a long time and many times, I have said why the implementation of the decisions of October 26 is "inevitable" for the salvation of the Greek economy and the euro. I will not allow anyone to question these statements," stresses the New Democracy leader.
Thus, Antonis Samaras has clearly demonstrated his intention not to sign the document with which Greece will be bound in writing to fulfil the obligations under the second bailout agreement. Europeans require the future Prime Minister, the Minister of Finance, the president of the Bank of Greece and the leaders of both major Greek parties to sign the letter.
Close associates of the New Democracy leader indicate that he has promised to support the specific decisions in parliament and will not change his decision. However, his refusal to sign the document is likely to create new obstacles to the formation of the coalition government.
A little later, EU Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn commented negatively on Antonis Samaras’ statement. "We expect a written commitment from Greece," he said. Replying to the question as to why the EU insists on a written assurance, Olli Rehn said that after the unilateral call for a referendum, the relationship of trust had been broken. It could not be repaired unless specific assurances are received.
So far, there has been no response to the incurred contradiction from the PASOK headquarters.
