George Papandreou’s government has received a vote of confidence from the Greek Parliament with 153 positive votes. A total of 298 deputies voted. 152 PASOK deputies and the independent, until today, Louka Katseli, supported the government. After the vote, she has joined the party's parliamentary group.

Milena Apostolaki, until recently a PASOK deputy, and the independent former New Democracy deputy Elsa Papadimitriou were absent from the voting.

In his impassioned speech earlier, Prime Minister Papandreou said that tomorrow, he would meet President Karolos Papoulias in order to begin negotiations with all parties to form a coalition government. "Immediately after the vote of confidence, on Saturday morning, I will visit the President and discuss with him who would assume the post of Prime Minister in the new cabinet," said George Papandreou.

"Elections here and now", was the response of the leader of New Democracy. "The masks have fallen. Mr. Papandreou has rejected our proposal in full. He is taking up a huge responsibility. The only possible solution is elections," said Antonis Samaras.
