Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou entered the presidency building shortly after noon. An hour later he came out and said: "Yesterday the Government received a vote of confidence. Today I came to the country's President to inform him and discuss my intention to make a vital contribution towards the formation of a broad coalition government. Its goal will be to vote on the bills and implement all necessary measures arising from the historic decisions of October 26... These are also the conditions for our country to remain in the eurozone. These moments are so important... The necessary contacts and discussions for forming a new coalition government will begin soon."
"Mr. Prime Minister, will you submit your resignation?" was the question that filled the air around the dozens of reporters and correspondents. They surrounded the Prime Minister and his associates on all sides, but never received a response.
Earlier today 50 journalists, not only from European countries but also from other continents, gathered around the presidency building, located a few metres from the Council of Ministers. All commented on the events of recent days and tried to guess the intentions of George Papandreou.
The Prime Minister did not say a word when he entered the building, but when he came out the media representatives literally stopped him. Operators of some Greek TV stations, who had placed their cameras on the sidewalk, failed to capture the Prime Minister's statement, because their colleagues from other TV stations and foreign reporters and photographers had surrounded George Papandreou in order to hear his cherished decision.
They chased him to the entrance of the Council of Ministers, and then began to broadcast the information to their media.
A little later George Papandreou met with Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos, to discuss the Eurogroup meeting on Monday. For this purpose, a meeting of the government committee will be held tomorrow.
Although until now George Papandreou is behaving as if nothing has happened in recent days, according to information published in real.gr, ongoing intensive negotiations to form a coalition government are being held right at this very moment.
The author of the article says that according to sources, George Papandreou is ready to resign and accept the offer for a person from the right side of the political spectrum to take on the position of Prime Minister.
Unnamed senior sources have said that Germany has set an ultimatum to resolve the political problems in Greece within three days. According to the publication a telephone conversation is expected later today between George Papandreou and Antonis Samaras. New Democracy sources confirmed the information about a possible phone call or meeting between the two leaders. According to commentators, the potential Prime Minister would be a person who was able to completely change the position of Antonis Samaras. For the moment he is still formally refusing to participate in negotiations for a coalition government.
