Several hours before the vote that will decide the fate of George Papandreou’s government, forecasts of its result are becoming more uncertain. It seems that some PASOK deputies will decide how to vote at the last minute. This means that every vote will be able to overturn the result.
Young deputies Eva Kaili and Elena Panariti have changed their positions and it is expected that they will support the Prime Minister and the cabinet. Elena Panariti has said that her response was associated only with the possible holding of a referendum; therefore, she would give her vote for the government. Eva Kaili responded similarly about an hour ago. "My decision has changed after the withdrawal of the proposal for a referendum," she said, but did not specify how she would vote.
Meanwhile, some lawmakers said they would give their vote expecting that negotiations to form a government of national consensus would begin tomorrow. Others, like Dimitris Lindzeris who yesterday said that George Papandreou was past history have also supported such a cabinet, but they were expecting to hear the Prime Minister’s intentions before deciding how to vote. Minutes ago, former Minister of Employment Louka Katseli joined this position too. She had been disaffiliated from PASOK about 10 days ago for voting against the law, introducing major changes in labour relations in the country.
The third category includes those members who will vote "for," clearly understanding that "Today's vote is not really a vote of confidence but it would give a mandate for forming a government of national responsibility." Among them is Vasso Papandreou, whose opinion is taken into consideration by many of her colleagues in PASOK.
