County farmers from Thessaloniki blocked the airport and caused chaos in order to meet Minister Katerina Badzeli, who arrived in town to open the 23rd International exhibition of agricultural machinery and implements AGROTICA. Ultimately, the Minister of Agriculture changed her route and the meeting did not take place. Meanwhile, increasing are the complaints against farmers who continue their blunt protests, blocking all kinds of transportation.
In her speech at the International Exhibition Chamber of Thessaloniki the Minister of Agriculture stressed about the need for radical changes in agricultural economy and once again turned with an appeal to farmers to participate in the dialogue because any possibility of to being awarded financial aid is impossible.
Yesterday the protests were joined by breeders and farmers from Peloponnese as well, who blocked the highway Patras-Corinth near village Egio. On Tuesday night truck drivers got into a fight with local farmers at Promahonas border post and the police had to intervene.
Egnatia highway near Kerdilya and Hrisoupoli and the old highway between Thessaloniki and Kavala are closed for a third consecutive week. Tractors near Kastro, Alamana and Elatia remain in their positions, blocking the movement of vehicles. They did not allow traffic on outskirt roads as well so yesterday Greece was cut in two parts for about one hour. During this time a 10km line was formed by cars and trucks. Today they said that the roadblock will last for longer than one hour. The threats were joined by farmers from Domoko, who announced they will close the road to Central Greece.
After a meeting with the Prime Minister of Bulgaria Boyko Borisov, the European Commission chairman José Emanuel Barroso said that the Commission is ready to put into effect all lawful measures to end the roadblocks, which have caused enormous damages both to Bulgaria and Greece.
