The date of early parliamentary elections in Greece is finally set at 20 September as the exploratory mandate procedure to form a government that Greece’s President launched today will end no later than 27 August or Thursday evening.
vima.gr. reports that the leaders of SYRIZA, Alexis Tsipras, Independent Greeks, Panos Kammenos, and the Communist Party, Dimitris Koutsoumbas, have informed President Prokopis Pavlopoulos that they do not intend to participate in any other government formation. This means that there is no possibility of forming a new government within this parliament.
Following the official confirmation of the above and the return of the exploratory mandate by New Democracy leader Evangelos Meimarakis on Monday, the President will deliver it to Panagiotis Lafazanis and his newly formed parliamentary group Popular Unity, and will subsequently complete the procedure.
If the mandate of Lafazanis does not lead to the formation of a government, Prokopis Pavlopoulos will not convene the council of political leaders nor will he submit the mandate to other parties. He will accept the resignation of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras by 28 August, Friday, at the latest and will appoint chairperson of the Supreme Administrative Court Vassiliki Thanou caretaker Prime Minister.
Therefore, the procedures under the Constitution will end no later than next Friday and the caretaker government involving only non-parliament members will take an oath on 29 August, Saturday. The National Assembly will be dissolved and the elections will be scheduled for 20 September.
