A fire broke out in the villa of former Prime Minister Costas Simitis in Agii Theodori resort on the border between the districts of Attica and Corinthia shortly after 2:30 a.m., when flames enveloped the kitchen and the living room of the building, which was empty at that time. The thick smoke activated the alarm system. The extinguishment of the fire
involved three firefighters and one fire truck. Costas Simitis’ villa is 6 metres away from the beach.
On the balcony of the house, the authorities have found the remains of a makeshift bomb. A fire-fighting team and police units are at the scene. The chief of the fire service of the Peloponnese, Konstantinos Giovas, stated before Skai TV that it is still early to draw conclusions about the cause of the fire but all possibilities are under investigation.
Costas Simitis was Prime Minister of Greece from 1996 to 2004. While he was in power, the country became a member of the euro zone on the basis of faked statistics, which are still being investigated.
