On Saturday morning, just before 5 a.m., a fire broke out in a farmhouse in Mesoropi, near Kavala. According to the fire department, the fire was caused by a burning wood stove and had spread rapidly throughout the house, which was old and built of wood. A total of ten people were in the house at the time. Six children were sleeping on the second floor, and their parents and grandparents were sleeping downstairs. Initially, the elder brother managed to get out, but when he realised that his brothers, aged 5 and 7, were not there, he returned to the house to help them get out. At that point, however, the roof collapsed and buried the three children beneath. The entire house was destroyed by the fire and surrounding houses were also damaged.

The family had a total of 10 children. Four of them are students, while the remaining six were living with their parents - an employee of the electric company in Kavala and a teacher of French. At weekends, the family often visited the children's father's parents in the village of Mesoropi.

Kavala Municipality will honour the memory of the children who perished and will cancel municipal schools' mini soccer competitions over the weekend. The elder brother was also supposed to take part in these competitions.
