Football mobsters beat plain-clothes policemen

The secret operation of the Greek police to capture a new generation racketeer, who acts as a football boss but in fact racketeers nightclubs and restaurants by providing "protection" against significant amounts ended with a complete fiasco. A few months ago, the police held a very successful investigation against the Athenian mob and managed to jail 216 "godfathers". A 46-year-old man whose tentacles spread in the Athens suburb of Oropos managed to slip out of their net.

After several months of following and working out, a group of 12 policemen, most of whom in plain clothes, decided to act on Sunday evening. They came to a party of the local football club, which took place in a nightclub near the old prison in the suburb. The moment they started to check the guests’ identity papers and gun licenses, they attacked the police officers and began beating them mercilessly. As a result, six police officers were hospitalized with moderate injuries, while the rest retreated miserably.

Oropos local residents, however, describe a different picture. They say the police arrived at the party and unreasonably started behaving aggressively. One of them even pulled out his gun and started shooting at the floor thereby putting the present at risk to be hit by a ricochet bullet. The police deny a colleague of theirs to have been shooting with his gun.

The case is being investigated.
