The governor of the Bank of Greece George Provopoulos called for the immediate formation of a "strong coalition government" and warned that the delay would affect the confidence in the country even more.

"I consider it imperative that a new government is formed immediately, and that it and the major political parties commit to the full implementation of the agreement of the heads of state of October 27, and the measures underpinning that agreement." said the Greek major banker to the Financial Times.

He pointed out that during the last two years the Greek banking system has shown resilience to the effects of uncertainty created by the debt crisis. He said that last week’s political events had caused additional difficulties for the economy and the banking system.

"To safeguard financial stability in this very challenging environment, it’s essential that a strong coalition government pursues the necessary policies that will ensure Greece’s future in the euro area," said the banker to the British economic magazine.

Earlier today, Minister of Finance Evangelos Venizelos released a written message denying media reports that he had opposed the nomination of Lucas Papademos for Prime Minister.

He stressed that they distorted reality and added, "It’s well known that when in June I was pressed to take on the duties of Finance Minister, I countered by proposing Lucas Papademos for the job. He refused it. I’m not in the Finance Minister’s post because I pursued it, but out of a sense of patriotic duty," said the the deputy prime minister in conclusion.
