After a many-hour meeting, Greek Gold workers decided to close indefinitely from Monday the Stratoniou viaduct and the Gomatiou junction in Halkidiki. They are protesting against the decision of the Minister of industrial restructuring, energy and environment to suspend the technical explorations at the company's sites in Skouries and Olympiada.
The decision was made public by the chairman of the Agia Varvara union, Georgios Hadzis. He pointed out that the two blocked points won't be letting any vehicles through, barring ambulances, fire engines and patrol cars.
Hadzis also pointed out that 2,000 people earn a living at the two sites, and the roadblock decision was taken unanimously.
Yesterday, Eldorado Gold made a statement saying that Greek Gold would take the necessary steps to cease all mining and development in Halkidiki, starting from 24 August.
Along with that, the statement says that Greek Gold will take legal action against the ministry's decision, and will also file an application for interim measures to the State Council and the Supreme Court of Greece.
The statement also vows that Greek Gold will continue to live up to its commitments in protecting the environment and the public interest in all three sites.
