The coalition government of SYRIZA and Independent Greeks fell below the 120 deputies, which it had set itself as a survival barrier, after losing the support of 47 of its own MPs in the vote on the third memorandum in parliament. This means that SYRIZA is ultimately split, hence Alexis Tsipras cannot continue to govern in this situation. However, the PM has chosen to seek a vote of confidence rather than an immediate launch of early elections.
According to cabinet members, a vote of confidence will be requested in parliament as soon as the procedures around the agreement with the creditors are over, including the 20 August release of the new loan's first tranche.
In the vote on the third bailout in plenary, which closed shortly after 10:00 a.m., SYRIZA lost a total of 47 votes, as 32 MPs from the party voted "against", 11 abstained and another three MPs voted "for "the bailout as a whole but abstained on individual articles of the draft. One MP was absent.
This tally generally represents a defeat for the government and the prime minister personally, as he believed until yesterday that the lost voices would not dip SYRIZA under the "psychological barrier" of 120 MPs. For comparison, when the government of SYRIZA and Independent Greeks was forming in January, it enjoyed the support of 162 MPs.
The third memorandum was passed by the Greek Parliament with 222 votes "for", 64 "against" and 11 "abstained".
