Dramatic political events took place in Athens in the afternoon today, after the country was a step away from economic collapse. The two main parties, the ruling PASOK and the main opposition New Democracy, have agreed how to govern from now on. Greece is on the verge of forming a government of national agreement with the Prime Minister approved by all or at least by most political forces in the country.

Both politicians had agreed to begin discussing the priorities and the agenda of the new government as well as those who would comprise it. Antonis Samaras stated he is able to propose specific persons for specific positions in the new cabinet. One of the conditions of the right leader is the law on immigration to be repealed.

Earlier today, at his request, George Papandreou met the President of the Republic Karolos Papoulias to inform him of the recent political and economic developments in Greece. No statements were made after the meeting. Papandreou spoke on the phone with the President of the far-right party LAOS, but no details from the conversation were submitted. The Socialist Prime Minister spoke with the leader of the Democratic Alliance Dora Bakoyannis, who expressed her willingness to support the government of agreement, but warned that if its formation fails, the people should say the final word.

While waiting the formal statement of George Papandreou, which is already two hours late, the first names of the candidates for prime minister circulated in the media. The LAOS leader George Karatzeferis proposed the former President Kostis Stephanopoulos. Many believe that his old age is an insurmountable obstacle for the occupation of this post. The socialist community is talking about Lucas Papadimas who was raised from the candidate for the minister of finance to the candidate for prime minister within 10 hours. The former vice president of the European Central Bank has many qualities he could offer Greece. The same applies to George Provopoulos, the Governor of the Bank of Greece, who is also supposed to be the new prime minister.
