Strong winds whose intensity in places is reaching 7-9 on the Beaufort scale have started to blow in the Greek seas since early morning due to which the port authorities of Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio have introduced a ban on the departure of all types of vessels.

Therefore, the trips of Blue Star Delos and Blue Star Paros ferries that had to depart from Piraeus at 07:30 am today were cancelled.

The trips of the hydrofoils to the islands in the Argo Saronic Gulf and the sea connections Agia Marina - Nea Styra on Evia, Kavala - Prinos on Thassos, Alexandroupolis - Samothrace and Kyllini - Zakynthos have been suspended as well.

The Hellenic National Meteorological Service has issued an emergency message to warn of deteriorating weather. According to the forecast, today there will be heavy rain and thunderstorms in some places. They have started from the region of the Ionian Sea, Epirus, western central Greece and western Peloponnese and it is expected that they will cover the whole country.

The phenomena will gradually subside in the afternoon and be confined within the region of Thrace, the islands of the northeast Aegean and Dodecanese.

At the same time, it will snow in mountainous areas with altitudes above 900 metres in the areas of Epirus, western central Greece and the northwestern Peloponnese.

In northern Greece, it is bitter cold due to the wave of extreme weather events that have occurred in the region of Evros in recent days.

Low temperatures and ice have literally "conquered" Kipi border checkpoint and "painted" fascinating pictures that you can see on the web site xanthinea.gr.
