Scenes resembling action movie sequences took place once the navy frigate Salamis cast anchor to bring out Greeks blocked in the war zone. The operation was carried out under dire circumstances.

According to reliable sources, after sailing for 27 hours (650 miles), Salamis cast anchor in the waters of Tripoli port and a group of marines secured a perimeter in the port, to enable the crew of the frigate to transport the blocked Greek citizens.

The military ship was anchored at a safe distance near the port. Divers on inflatable boats sailed to the coast. Once they secured the safe boarding of the people, they started transporting them. The rough sea did not allow for the 186 people to be taken to the frigate. Due to the high waves, they were transported by 2 Libyan boats.

It is also reported that throughout the operation, marines guarded the boats and Salamis was in a stand-by regime, ready to defend the people and respond to any threat.

Then the frigate sailed on course to the port of Piraeus where she is expected to arrive early on Saturday morning, 2 August.

Notably, just as it was emphasized by Associated Press, the moment when the frigate cast anchor by the Libyan coast, fierce fighting started between the participants in the conflict. A series of explosions started in the airport area thus making the mission even more dangerous.

The Minister of National Defence, Dimitris Avramopoulos, greeted the marines who took part in the Aginor mission. He expressed his satisfaction with the excellent planning and performance of the operation which took out from Libya Greek embassy officials, Greek and foreign citizens. He also stated that the successful completion of the mission proves the active role of Greece in the region.
