The Greek authorities apprehended a 37-year-old Iraqi of Kurdish origin after his passport check showed that it had been declared as stolen and cancelled by the authorities in Iraq.
The Iraqi, who is a resident of Greece, was apprehended at Athens airport, where he arrived from Istanbul. The passport was part of a batch of blank documents that the members of the Islamic State had stolen from the citizens’ centre in the Iraqi province of Nineveh.
The detainee stated that his relative in Iraq had sent him the passport by mail. He could not leave the country because of his involvement in a human trafficking network. The charges raised against the Iraqi national include theft of false documents and violation of the law on foreigners and of the migration and social integration code.
A pre-trial investigation has been launched on the case.
